Len Hockey for Chingford!

W-1

My name is Len Hockey and I am 53 years old, a hospital porter and a trade union activist of over 30 years standing. I am currently a branch secretary for the UNITE trade union and a Socialist Party member.

I have worked at Whipps Cross hospital in east London for 26 years during which time I have led numerous campaigns including building trade union organisation, against victimisation and against down grading of pay. Also an historic battle to end the two tier workforce which, following successful strike action, secured increased pay and conditions for a privatised, low paid, mainly migrant workforce.

In Chingford ConDem policies have meant vicious attacks including a library closure, the cut of a fire engine and denigration of this service through attacks on workers’ pensions. Also, the slashing of vital children’s and young people’s services, social work services to baby clinics and career services to the youth offending team.

I am proud to be taking part in the biggest left-of-Labour electoral challenge for 60 years: in a coalition of dedicated campaigners fighting for permanent, properly paid jobs, trade union rights, affordable housing, decent public services and benefits, and against the establishment parties policy of austerity, ie. planned poverty for the millions while the super-rich get richer.

Here’s some coverage of Len’s campaign in the local paper.
